Photopia 2022 is a one-of-a-kind happening that brings alive the fascination of photography and videography through a collective playful experience. The four-day, city-wide, live event offers magical spaces to try out new creative ideas and equipment and supports the concept of sharing—from expert know-how on site to extensive content available online on the community platform.

Hamburg is a paradise…
… for photo and video fans as well as all the smartphone users who strive for better pictures. And, of course, an ideal location for established and up-and-coming players of the imaging industry to show their products here.

The idea…
… is to make PHOTOPIA the new meeting place for the pioneers and thinkers of the industry. In addition to encouraging the members of the photography and imaging professions to share ideas and views, there will be side events promoting interdisciplinary interaction with decision-makers representing other industries and technologies. As a commercial and innovation hotspot, Hamburg provides an ideal backdrop for this event. The famous port city is a center of imaging and photographic culture.  And PHOTOPIA will also take place in parallel with the Reeperbahnfestival, Europe’s biggest club festival where photographers cannot only find great motifs but also benefit from synergies with young, urban visitor audiences. What is more, the NEXT Conference, one of the top events of the digital industry, will bring together decision-makers, thinkers ,and creative minds from around the world in Hamburg at the same time.

“The innovative PHOTOPIA Hamburg concept is thoroughly convincing. We at Leica believe that this new festival provides the ideal combination of user experience, photo culture, and retail.”
Falk Friedrich, Managing Director, Leica Camera Deutschland

Photopia—three exciting components.

•Photopia Festival:  Citywide opportunities for learning, testing and pushing the envelope in photography, imaging, and videography.  Multiple sponsorship opportunities for companies to connect with the public and the greater market.

Photopia Summit:  Leading companies and innovators will gather at the Hamburg Messe and Congress Center to showcase the latest technology, software and ideas.

•Photopia 365:  A new form of industry platform, Photopia 365 will create a unique system of inspiration for users – from smartphone owners to imaging pros. And a business platform for established players and newcomers not just from Europe, but all over the world.

PHOTOPIA Hamburg will become the destination for inspiration and interdisciplinary discourse at both a B2C and B2B level. Not just four days a year, but on an ongoing basis. With the motto “Share your vision,” the industry is looking to a future in which smart imaging solutions will enrich the lives of more and more people.

A city within the city, made up of 350 shipping containers:PHOTOPIA

Hamburg turns exhibition halls into a metropolis Hamburg,

From 23 to 26 September, 2021, PHOTOPIA Hamburg will celebrate its premiere at the Hamburg exhibition complex and various other locations throughout the city. Under the banner “1 Festival – 4 days live – 365 days online”, Hamburg Messe und Congress breaks new ground with a triad composed of the PHOTOPIA Summit, PHOTOPIA City and PHOTOPIA 365.

With broad visual axes and long street fronts full of spectacular motifs at their ends, park-like green areas and two large stages for national and international photographers and influencers, the PHOTOPIA Summit will provide an ideal ambience for the new festival of the imaging community, a setting that is as innovative as it is attractive. This unprecedented exhibition hall concept is the work of the distinguished stage and set designer Jens Weber. Covering 20,000 square metres across two halls, this unique installation will consist of around 350 shipping containers arranged to create unique perspectives, shapes and figures.

Homage to Hamburg: A city of containers
“We want to create an atmosphere that inspires and thrills exhibitors and visitors alike, motivating them to take pictures or record videos. Our concept is based on the vision of a modern-time metropolis: we are setting up a veritable city including streets, shops, stages and a park. The containers hail from around the world to pay homage to Hamburg as a gateway to the world, and to its port, which we are bringing right into the exhibition halls with this installation,” says Jens Weber, explaining his concept. Melina Paeper, product manager for PHOTOPA Hamburg, is enthusiastic about the exceptional design: “We are excited to have won such an internationally acclaimed expert for the design of the PHOTOPIA Summit. We are consciously pursuing an innovative path, and setting up this special city for the imaging community is a great fit. We want to appeal to all target groups, from filming and photography professionals through to smartphone users, and include them all into this concept as active participants, along with the exhibitors.”

Successful fusion of festival and expo
The infrastructure of the PHOTOPIA Summit successfully fuses components reminiscent of the architecture of megacities with the traditional elements of a trade fair, such as product presentations, vending stands and opportunities for customer interaction and networking. The stacked containers will not only form a fascinating skyline and provide a unique setting for the festival but also serve as spaces for many activities. Exhibitors will be able to use them as stand upgrades or meeting rooms for B2B meetings. Other containers will be turned into ‘hidden’ galleries exhibiting photos, for example those of the renowned fashion photographer Ellen von Unwerth who is also the honorary patron of PHOTOPIA Hamburg. Of course, and true to the PHOTOPIA motto #shareyourvision, expanding the skills will play a significant role at the festival, which is being organised in cooperation with partners such as Online Marketing Rockstars, the German photo industry association, and the concurrent Reeperbahn Festival. In addition, the Creative Content Conference will feature industry experts and keynote speakers who will deliver fascinating insights into the future of film and photography.

Exciting perspectives and spaces
“At the PHOTOPIA Summit we want to create a very special experience, one that appeals to all senses, not only within the B2B segment but throughout the entire imaging community. To achieve that we will use changing light installations, play with odours and sounds, and display larger-than-life busts of famous people, along with typical objects from the maritime world, such as a ship propeller,” explains set designer Jens Weber. “Furthermore, we will use some of the containers as viewing platforms. All this will enable us to create a multitude of exciting perspectives and spaces. We hope to inspire visitors as well as the exhibitors themselves to explore the event and become an active part of PHOTOPIA Hamburg themselves. After all, it will be them who will fill our city within the city with life.” While the PHOTOPIA Summit will be a huge showcase of new products and services as well as trends from the imaging industry, including installations, workshops, conferences and masterclasses, all in an inspiring setting under one roof, the new event format will take photography out into the public space, as well. PHOTOPIA City will feature world-class exhibitions and photo walks throughout the city of Hamburg, with shipping containers placed at various points in the urban space alluding to the design concept implemented at the exhibition halls. Finally, PHOTOPIA 365 as an online platform will interlink the community through the entire year, presenting current topics related to the Imaging theme.
